MCPS and PPL – the royalty collection agencies who, combined, represent the rights and interests of songwriters, composers, publishers, performers and record companies have advised us that the new ProDub Licence will be released on Tuesday 1st July 2008. This licence has been created to legitimise the activities of DJs, karaoke jockeys, fitness instructors and others who copy legally-owned music onto a digital format (such as a CDR, or hard disk) for use in a professional or semi-professional
capacity.
As SEDA is run for its membership, the SEDA committee members will review the small print of this new licence once it has been released and report back.
Paul Forsyth, member of the License Working Party on behalf of SEDA says:
"We need to look beyond the ‘I’ve bought the CD, why should I have to pay for it twice?’ argument and realize that when we purchase a CD, we actually purchase a piece of plastic and the right to privately listen to the music contained on that piece of plastic. Any copying whatsoever is an illegal act as will be confirmed by the copyright statement printed on each CD. If there is any argument against licensing, let’s try to keep it factual, and reasonable rather than emotional. I will reserve any further comments until I have reviewed the fine detail and small print of the ProDub License when it is released."
When the licence is released on 1st July 2008, a FAQ section will be published to help potential users understand the license. If you have any pressing questions on this licence, please contact info@produb.co.uk - they will answer as much as they can during working hours.
SEDA wishes to thank NADJ for their kind invitation to attend their AGM and trade show on Sunday in Birmingham. The event was very well attended, informative, and fun. Visitors were able to see and try plenty of new sound and lighting products, retailers were on site providing show special offers, and the seminar theatre saw some very educational and entertaining presentations throughout the day.
The LWP together with MCPS announced proposals for an exciting new DJ dubbing license which allows for format shifting of purchased music, although more discussion needs to follow.

SEDA Chairman with MCPS representative.
NADJ also announced exciting plans for a DJ scholarship scheme to train young people in all aspects of DJing alongside the launch of their Youth Development Programme .

The HM office of Energy has released a consultation paper to SEDA (and other bodies) for feedback. In line with the Kyoto Protocol, Mobile DJ's would be forced to pay a carbon offset fee to mitigate their own greenhouse gases from energy used during a function, it is suggested that a carbon credit system could be administered through a CDM (Clean Development Mechanism) via organisations such as ours and NADJ. Although the fee has not been hinted at, it would depend on power useage, transport, and food used by the operator or DJ and his/her staff at the end of the night.
Please make your views known to the SEDA Chairman Mr J Kidd before it's too late.
OK, thanks for reading, and thank you to all those concerned enough to get in touch - it was our little April Fool.
We’d heard about this music fair as being the biggest in Europe, if not the world and so on the 12th of March, myself and Simon decided to set off on Lufthansa to investigate what this exhibition had to make it stand out from the rest, plus to get some ideas (and maybe some exhibitors) for this years DJ Show North. After a very shaking take off and landing, we arrived in Frankfurt at 11am, dumped our cases in the hotel (after sorting out why they had given us a double bed to share!) and made our way to the “Messe”.
This exhibition has 10 exhibition halls, each one is the size of Earls Court one and most of the halls have 3 floors! Each hall is linked with moving walkways (thank goodness) and it dawned on us very soon we were not going to be able to see everything and we had to cut out the chaff to see the wheat. So we ruled out the halls of guitars, wind & brass instruments, pipe organs etc etc and stuck to the DJ and Technology, Amplification, and Lighting halls. Lots of current equipment on show and some eye openers, Pioneer were showcasing their new digital audio/video mixer, the SVM-1000 which is an eyeopener for anyone wanting to blur the lines between the music and the visuals, but at £3,700 it’s a serious investment. More realistic is the MEP-7000 at £1200 it’s Pioneers answer to the Numark D2’s, Cortex’s etc, its killer features being automixing and karaoke support. Numark were showing off their DDS-80 which is effectively the IDJ2 in rack form with a removable hard disk and cdrom drive.
American DJ were in full effect with what looked like their complete range of lighting on their stand ! Lots of traditional lighting getting the led makeover and being dragged into this century, how long before we can run the lot from a 9V battery ! The sheer size of this exhibition is daunting and getting lost was a repeating theme of this trip, on one of these random excursions I stumbled across DJ-Tech, they have an every growing range of products to satisfy any dj, lots of sd card players built into, amps, players, decks and an every growing army of devices that can be used as “control surfaces” for software.
Day 2 and after an evening of abusing the Irish bar next to our hotel, we launched ourselves into the lighting halls, purple laser is the new “blue led” i.e. the next big thing, with lots of Chinese manufacturers vying to burn out our retinas with spectacular shows, and some very interesting progress being made in the field of laser video projection, a scanning laser that does full rgb video, yes please! Pausing to catch a breath we rested in the huge marquee in the centre square and watched (and listened ) to the PA demo with guitarists and bands all giving the EV PA a run for its money. We then had a Bose demo to attend (thanks to Andy from Bose) where were treated to an amazing demo of the L1 system in a live band scenario, with Andy switching the L1 from normal stereo to one L1 per band member to show just how different the sound is compared to a regular PA. Told him we need one of those demos for DJ’s !! Plus they had the best food & drink at the show !
American DJ provided the after party for our 2nd night and after some impromptu DJ’ing (proving mobile DJ’s can mix) we crawled back to our hotel in the early hours for a few hours sleep before our 9am taxi for the airport arrived. We definitely need another 2 days next year, and I think Brian is threatening to come with us!
Video of us in Frankfurt is here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vBTY2el84Gg
American DJ’s Party (with DJ Tutor) is here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nRG_zDHMURA

DJ Show North
The new year is always a good time in the nerdy DJ calendar because it’s NAMM, an industry
show showcasing new music technology in Anaheim, CA (in the good ol’ US of A). Imagine a huge
get together of all the leading companies in our industry, Denon, Pioneer, Technics, Numark,
Shure and hundreds of others all showing their latest releases. I like to call it DJ Porn. Let’s look
at some of the best bits...
Pioneer launched their new media player, the MEP7000 in an attempt to wipe out the competition,
namely the HD2500, Numark D2 and most of the Cortex range. It looks great, colour screen, but
what’s it really like?
Well, hopefully at the March SEDA show night we’ll have one to show you!
Denon not being one to miss out on showing off some new goodies launched a brand new CD
player, the DNS1200, a compact USB/CD media player and controller. The X050, a prof essional
12”, 2u, 2 channel mixer, DNHP700 Headphones and f inally the Denon DNX120 compact
performance mixer. Sounds good! Hopefully Gary will bring some of these shiny new toys in
March. Interestingly, we also heard of another fantastic new Denon product, but we can’t tell you
about it just yet, but DDay is coming!
Other goodies includes some hot new products f rom Stanton, The multicoloured Vestax VCI100
controller, Numark’s Serato NS7 system, and a product that would even make our web geezer
Brian hot under the collar, the EKS Otus.
On Sof tware, OtsAV has recently been upgraded to 1.85. MIDI is still an eagerly awaited addon so
you can use controllers such as the Denon HC4500. It still remains to be (as f ar as I am
concerned, an Ots user of 8 years or so) THE most reliable Audio / AV & Karaoke package on the
market. Virtual DJ was upgraded last week to version 5.07 bringing a whole host of new features,
especially if Karaoke is your thing. I’m sure that users of PCDJ VJ and Numark Cue will also see
these new features in software upgrades over the next few weeks. MAudio also announced a
upgrade to their fantastic DJ sof tware, now at version 1.5.
Word also reaches me that Gemini are trying to grab a corner of the software market with “Groove”
which claims to be a “complete and reliable professional mixing package”. Upon closer inspection
it appears to be another spin off of Virtual DJ, albeit with a different skin. Strangely though, Groove
doesn’t appear to offer Video/Karaoke as an option, only time will tell. Watch this space!
And finally, never one to be left out with a new release is PCDJ who have launched Dex with the tagline “the best audio mixing program on Earth”. Very bold claims there! One interesting feature of this software is that it comes with a PCDJ Red 5.2 skin (the old Red) to make it look like their retro classic! This is a good way of getting all these fancy new USB Midi controllers to work with Red 5.2! As I wasn’t sure if it was the rebadged VRM line I did some digging and soon discovered that it is a spin off of a piece of software called DJ Decks. Time will tell if it really is the best audio mixing program on Earth.
See it first at the SEDA Show Night on 16th March 2008

16th January 2008
Coming soon: the new MEP-7000 multi-entertainment player and controller, especially for the mobile DJ and bar market.
The MEP-7000 offers a flexible high quality solution specifically with digital music in mind, being compact and easily to transport, yet inheriting the basic functions and features of our popular CDJ series CD Decks. The MEP-7000 enables your to play MP3/AAC files stored on various memory formats, along with playback of music from conventional media such as CD/CD-ROM/DVD-ROM discs.
The system can also be setup to playback and mix music automatically using playlists, allowing the system to entertain when no DJ is present. The MEP-7000 and SEP-C1 Software Entertainment Controller are a response to the trend of laptops being utilised by professional DJs. Recent developments have changed the way mobile and club DJs organise and play their music. No longer carrying boxes of vinyl or CD’s full of music, laptops, USB flash media and hard drives are becoming standard amongst the DJ community. Key new features to this product type are the 4.3-inch colour LCD screen that gives clear accurate information, allowing intuitive and easy menu navigation.
The MEP-7000 transforms into a Karaoke playback device when a CD-G disc is inserted, displaying the playback video on the LCD screen, but can also be fed to external monitors using the composite video output terminal. The SEP-C1 (also available as a separate unit) works as a software controller when used in conjunction with compatible software such as our bundled “DJS”. This allows your to manage and control playback of audio files stored on your computer, to give full scale DJ performance without the need for a mouse or keyboard.
The MEP-7000 will be available from April 2008 with a suggested retail price of €1499 (excluding VAT), while the SEP-C1 controller stands at €749 (excluding VAT).
Dynamic digital media playback and MIDI-control via USB
The MEP-7000 allows USB control from either PC or Mac. So, besides music from CD/DVD, the MEP-7000 lets DJs play music files, such as MP3 /AAC/WAV/AIFF, stored on USB keys, HDD, CD-R/RW and DVD±R/RW.
The unit is also compatible via USB with Pioneer’s DJS software or applications such as Serato Scratch LIVE or Traktor – without the need for a time coded disc.
USB connectivity furthermore means that the SEP-C1 can easily be used as a MIDI controller for MIDI-compatible computer applications.
Area-Colour OEL, 4.3-inch colour LCD for express music mapping
The 4.3-inch colour LCD with high visibility, intelligent GUI (Graphic User Interface) and a rotary selector enables rapid track searches from huge music libraries. To achieve this, the MEP-7000 adopts an industry-first Area-Colour OEL (Organic Electroluminescene) display, ensuring that the user can see performance data in harsh lighting conditions.
Scratch-happy Jog Wheel anda wide range of effects
The high quality Touch Sensor Jog Wheel is capable of controlling various scratch sounds and these definitely broaden the scope of any DJ performance. The MEP-7000 carries 3 patterns of Scratch Jog Effects (SCRATCH, BUBBLE and TRANS) and 3 patterns of Digital Jog Break Effects (JET, ROLL and WAH), which vary depending on the DJ’s choice and use of the Jog Wheel .
Effects lovers will be pleased to know there are also 8 patterns of DJS Effect (DELAY, ECHO, AUTO PAN, AUTO TRANCE, AUTO FILTER, FLANGER, REVERB and PITCH SHIFTER) available, and that these can all be synced with the BPM (Beat Per Minute), if required. Only when connected to DJS via the USB connectivity.
Auto Mix for automatic mixed playback of tracks from Play List
The MEP-7000 uses an Auto Mix function that allows auto mix playback of tracks registered on the Play List. There are then 4 patterns of Mix Mode (ECHO, ZIP, CUT IN and CROSS FADE), allowing music to be mixed in a selected style and played automatically.

Cortex HDC-500 1U Digital Music Controller
Cortex HDTT-5000 USB MP3 Player

The ImpossibLED is an amazing LED effect that projects spectacular firework-like effects onto whatever you choose to aim it at. The effect you get is 5 circles of LED's wrapped around a centre circle, you really need to see it to get the best effect! It crams 392 high-output, low power LED's in various colours (Red/Green/Blue & White) into a case that weighs no more than 5kg! It can be run sound to light, master/slave or you can even DMX it with a choice of 4 or 10 DMX channels depending on how much control you want. Some say the case is rather large but it fits just right into a 12” vinyl case which you can pick up for as little as £20 from some outlets. For the best effect, run two together in master/slave mode. They really do look amazing!

Built into exactly the same case as the ImpossibLED, the MarveLED gives a similar effect but
contains only 156 LED's and weighs in at 4.2kg. Although the effect is similar it's slightly different
in the way that you get one large single circle effect with the LED's arranged in a way that you get
some amazing patterns. There are 1,000's of built in programs if you choose to run it in sound to
light mode, or again in master/slave with two or more heads. Four channel DMX is also on offer.
Like the ImpossibLED, this light is also 100% dimmable should you find the LED's too bright,
which is quite possible!

The Prolight LED Boogie is a very low cost dual moonflower lighting effect. A total of 92 mixed
colour ultra-bright LED's create dual beams to cover a dance floor with rich and vivid colours. The
low-power consumption and low heat output from this new LED technology allows the lighting unit
to run for 1000's of hours continuous operation with no duty cycle. The LED Boogie features preprogrammed
patterns and sound activated operation for an instantaneous and vibrant light show. At
just 3.8kg it's a fantastic effect for the weight.

The LED Tango is basically a vertically-hung Boogie with scanning mirrors that move in time with
the music and project the effect all around the room. It weighs a little more, around 6kg, but the
mirrors add a whole new dimension to the Boogie offering a much wider beam spread.

With the use of one High power 3-Watt LED in each unit the SuperNova produces beams similar in
output power to that of a 400W halogen lamp. The package includes 2 x multi-colour and 2 x white
moonflower effects which complement each other perfectly. The vivid red, green and blue beams
fill the room whilst the white beams cut through the atmosphere creating cool silhouettes. The
complete package comes supplied in a heavy duty road bag with a CA-8 controller, DMX cables
and G clamps. This effect needs to be seen to be believed.

"Designed for use with our DVJ-1000 DVD/CD decks, the SVM-1000 gives DJs comprehensive control by synchronising both audio and video elements of their performance. Even audio-only DJs can easily add visuals synced to the music from the SVM-1000's built-in visualiser capability.
Complete with LCD touch panel, an impressive range of effects and 96 kHz/ 24-bit studio sound quality, the MIDI assignable SVM-1000 functions in a similar fashion to our acclaimed DJM series – which for DJs mean s that the doors to full-on AV freedom are now fully open! DJs and VJs have worked together to deliver immersive AV experiences for decades, and of course it is natural that the two art forms are so closely interlinked. Our revolutionary DVJ-X1 brought the two crafts closer than ever before in 2004, as the world’s first DVD decks opened up VJing to DJs. However, a major stumbling block for many was the lack of a simple and easy-to-use AV mixer; DJs and VJs had to use separate mixers to blend sound and vision.
Now the super-versatile SVM-1000 has the power and technology to change all that. Developed with input from leading DJ and VJ artists this mighty mixer works perfectly in both audio and AV set-ups. For many artists this mixer will be the missing link they have been waiting for. DJs and VJs around the world now have the potential to explore new avenues of creativity!"
This beast is due out in February 2008. For the full story, check out the Pioneer website.
Allen & Heath has made an addition to the leading Xone DJ range, with the launch of the Xone:42 high performance 4-channel DJ mixer with USB audio interface.

“Designed to seamlessly interface with current leading edge DJ technology, the Xone:42 has an ergonomic, intuitive layout, making it one of the easiest to use hi-tech mix tools around,” comments Xone Designer, Andy Rigby-Jones.
The Xone:42’s feature set is built around 4 dual-input stereo channels; channels 1 and 4 are phono/line, while channels 2 and 3 are line/line. All four channels have a powerful +6dB to total kill 3-band EQ, a 9-segment 3-colour bar meter, gain control, and 60mm VCA faders with illuminated X/Y crossfader selection. Xone’s legendary Voltage Control Filter is included on each channel via illuminated assignment switches, with selectable filter type, resonance, and frequency controls.
The mixer sports a new and original feature – the ‘X-FX‘ system - enabling an external effects processor to be easily interfaced. A single knob controls the proportion of the channel signal sent to the effects unit, from 0 to 100%, and the affected signal is returned to the main mix, or can be routed through the filter.
The Xone:42 incorporates a USB audio interface for easy connection to a computer and integration of digital media. It can be used to play back music files from a laptop and to record mixes from the Xone:42, or, when used with appropriate software, as a digital DJ effects unit that can be patched into the X-FX system. The USB input combines with an XLR microphone input to provide an additional channel with two band EQ and rotary level control.
The mixer also features a 45mm VCA crossfader with curve control, and a powerful monitoring section with split cue control, mix to cue, two headphone outputs (1/4” and 3.5mm), dedicated booth output, and balanced main mix outputs on XLR.
SRP is £599 (ex VAT) and the mixer will be available from autumn 2007.

See the SEDA events page for an exclusive invite to the launch of this exciting product this Sunday at the Ministry of Sound!
